Our care homes aim to be a comfortable home from home for all our residents but we love it when individuals bring their own personality to their rooms. This can also help those living in care homes settle in easier by creating their own homely space. If you are looking for ways to make your care home room feel more like home or are looking for ideas to help a friend or relative decorate their care home room to feel more homely, we’ve pulled together some top tips to help you on your way.
How Can I Decorate a Care Home Room to Feel More Individual?
When trying to make your care home room more homely, there are some limits. However, whilst you may not be able to repaint the walls or alter the furniture too much, there are plenty of ways to decorate your nursing home room to feel more like home.
Bring Personal Items From Home
Our first tip is also the most simple. One of the best ways to make your care home room feel more like home is to bring a bit of home with you. You or your loved one might have a favourite footstool or a figurine that brings back fond memories. They may have a favourite lamp that has moved homes with them over the years or a favourite picture frame containing memories with a loved one. These are all perfect things to decorate a care home bedroom with.
Make Your Care Home Room More Cosy
Whilst we’ve designed our care home bedrooms to be as cosy as possible, there is nothing like putting your own stamp on a room to make it feel more like home. Some great ways to make your care home room feel more homely are to add some homely throws and cushions, particularly if you have an old faithful blanket that you know will keep your loved one cosy. If your loved one has a chair or sofa in their room, some colourful cushions can really brighten the space up and make great gifts for those living in care homes over the festive period. Sensory or activity cushions and blankets can also be great for those with later stages of dementia.
Another way to make a care home room cosier is by adding familiar smells. Adding a diffuser with a favourite smell, adding scented sachets to drawers or adding an air freshener are all ways to make a care home bedroom more homely and can also double as decorative elements to add a touch of personality.
Add an Activity Box
Depending on the individual, an activity box could be a fun item to keep in your relative’s care home bedroom. This could involve things such as adult colouring books and pens, puzzle books, fidget toys to help calm or even something as simple as a magazine rack. Similar to this, a memory box can be a good item to include in a care home room for someone with Dementia or Alzheimers-related conditions. This could include things such as pictures of loved ones or items that might spark memories such as small items related to places they have travelled, for example.
