Uplifting Care Home Activities at Select Healthcare
At the heart of every Select Healthcare home, you’ll find a warm and nurturing environment where our residents’ well-being is paramount. Offering a variety of care home activities are just some of the ways we prioritise physical health and mental and emotional wellness. If you’re wondering how we add fun and vibrancy to our residents’ days, here’s a round-up of some of the residential care activities that have taken place in our care homes recently.
Lively Music Mobility Sessions
This month, Greenleigh Care Home residents in Dudley enjoyed a music mobility session to get their blood pumping. With lively tunes and a few oversized balloons, a music and movement session is an engaging way to promote mobility and improve strength and flexibility among residents.
Celebrate Cultural Days
Earlier this month, residents at Greenleigh Care Home also celebrated their International Day. Staff dressed up in beautiful cultural attire and showcased some traditional dances from Asia to the delight of the residents. Residents at Jubilee Court Care Home in Coseley also celebrated their International Day back in July in a similar way. Cultural days are a fabulous way for residents to share and experience other cultures through food, dance and storytelling. Celebrations like Greenleigh’s International Day can help to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome.
Fun Days, Fetes and Garden Parties
Outdoor activities like garden parties and fetes are the perfect excuse for residents to invite family and friends to join in the festivities. Residents at Royal Park Care Home in Wolverhampton enjoyed the August sunshine with a summer fete in the garden. This was also a fundraising event where the home raised £402. Garden parties don’t have to be saved for summer. With Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas coming later in the year, there’ll be more reasons to wrap up and take the party outdoors.
Entertaining Live Music
When it comes to choosing entertainment for care homes, the residents are in charge in Select Healthcare homes. Everyone loves a good sing-a-long and music therapy is a popular way to engage residents, especially those with dementia. In Rochdale, Manchester, Springfield Park Care Home residents recently enjoyed some entertaining live music and a few jokes from a local entertainer.
Day Trips
Activities for nursing home residents and those in residential care don’t have to be based in the care home. Select Healthcare residents are always on the go. When it comes to meaningful activities, day trips are some of the best ways to explore the community outside of the home and beyond. From days out in Blackpool to going for lunch at a favourite pub, outdoor activities for care home residents help to uplift spirits and avoid feelings of boredom and isolation. The residents at Springfield Care Home enjoyed a day out to Hollingworth Lake with a pub lunch and ice creams in the sun. Meanwhile, in Wolverhampton, residents at Aldergrove Manor Care Home enjoyed a trip to a local garden centre.
Arts and Crafts
There are many well-being benefits of arts and crafts in care homes and at Select Healthcare, creativity is encouraged. Sometimes, art can be used as an outlet for residents to express themselves especially if verbal communication isn’t possible. At other times, art sessions provide a great opportunity for elderly residents to reminisce, especially if they haven’t been creative since childhood. In Walsall, some residents at Delves Court Care Home have their artwork displayed in the hallways for other residents, staff and visitors to enjoy.
Cooking and Baking Activities
Meaningful care home activities like cooking and baking not only result in delicious treats but also provide an opportunity to develop life skills and enhance independence and confidence. Pizza-making sessions and cake-baking activities are just a few of the ways residents can maintain their independence and gain new skills. In Wrexham, residents in Rhosyn Melyn Care Home recently enjoyed a group baking session where they made tasty apple crumble from scratch.
Care Home Games
When it comes to indoor activities for care homes, playing games offers more than just an enjoyable pastime. Game nights promote social interaction, fun and an opportunity to develop skills like hand-eye coordination. In Shropshire, residents at Woodcote Hall Residential Care Home have been getting active with indoor ten-pin bowling while residents of Beech Tree Nursing Home in Basingstoke have been enjoying indoor volleyball games with pool noodles and balloons. For those who prefer something a little less strenuous, Aldergrove Manor Care Home has a Friday night bingo club while Woodcote Hall residents find board games with staff are another popular way to pass the time.
Animal Visits
Although animals are often not allowed to stay in care homes with residents, it doesn't mean they can’t visit from time to time. Residents at Beech Tree Nursing Home were recently visited by Berkshire Reptile Encounters and a few of their reptilian ambassadors. Some residents enthusiastically handled snakes and lizards and enjoyed getting to know the animals. Earlier in the year the residents were visited by alpacas and even raised a few chicks at Easter. Animals can offer many calming and therapeutic benefits to residents and home visits mean even those who struggle to get outdoors won't have to miss out.
