In the News: Maria Turns 100!
One of our fantastic residents was in the news recently when she reached the milestone birthday of 100 years old. Maria has survived World War II Siberian labour camps as well as the pandemic in her life and spent the day surrounded by friends and family at our Westwood Court Nursing Home in Winsford.
Maria says the world “has changed, it has become better” since she was deported to Russia during her final year of high school in Baranowicze in what was then Poland and is now part of Belarus. “There is more thinking about people. It is the people that matter.” Shortly before the end of the war, Maria was recruited by the RAF to the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force which gave her the chance to start a new life in Chester. A fantastic linguist, she speaks Polish, Russian, French and English and even started to learn Spanish in her 50’s with her daughter Stephanie who flew in from Boston Massachusetts for the occasion attributing being an avid gardener to her long life.
The occasion was marked by a letter from the new King and Queen and when asked about the secret to a long and happy life Maria said, “Be true to yourself and to others, understand them.”

We’re also shouting about the fantastic efforts of Andy, Iain and everyone who took part in the fishing fundraiser for dementia raising a massive £1,250 for Aldergrove Manor’s EMI unit which will go towards enhancing the care home environment for our residents at the home in Wolverhampton.
