Common Questions About Moving to a Care Home

April 28th 2021

When moving into a care home or moving a loved one into a care home, it can be an overwhelming time and you may have a number of questions about the experience. We’ve rounded up some common questions about moving into a care home with answers to help guide you through the next step in your or your loved one’s life.

How Do I Choose the Right Care Home?

If you are choosing a care home for a loved one or yourself, you may be wondering how to choose the right care home for your needs. The best way to find the right care home for you is to find out as much information as you can about the care home. Personal recommendations are always a good source of knowledge but there are also lots of resources online, for example our own care home directory, where you can find out more about our nationwide care homes. Once you have narrowed down your choice of care home, it is a good idea to get in touch with the care home itself to find out more about the services they offer and if possible arrange for a visit. We’ve put together a guide to help you choose the right care home for you on our blog, read it here.

Can I Take My Belongings With Me to a Care Home?

Our range of UK care homes aim to create a welcoming environment that feels like home to every one of our residents. Part of this includes seeing familiar objects from home in order to feel comfortable in their own rooms. Whilst room sizes may dictate what you are able to take into a care home, most care homes will allow you to bring some of your personal belongings with you and it is often encouraged. The best way to find out what you or your relative will be able to take with them when moving into a care home is to talk to the staff members at your chosen care home. They will be able to advise on what other residents usually bring with them as well as room sizes to see if the items you would like to take will fit.

How Do I Stay in Touch With Family When Moving into a Care Home?

One of the biggest elements of moving into a care home is often the move away from family and friends who have previously supported residents in their own homes. However, moving to a care home doesn’t need to mean losing touch with friends and family. Whilst the pandemic has added some restrictions to face-to-face visits, we put together a guide to staying in touch with family members during the pandemic here, the loosening up of restrictions and inventiveness of fantastic care home staff means that there are plenty of ways to stay in touch with friends and family when moving into a care home. Many care homes are now allowing in-person visits from one friend or family member subject to tests whilst window visits and video calls can also be arranged.

What Sort of Activities Are Available in a Care Home?

The great news is that all of our UK care homes offer a wealth of activities to keep our residents both physically and mentally active and can adapt activities to fit our residents' specific needs. Whilst activities out and about have been restricted due to the pandemic, we hope to resume our usual wide range of trips to coffee shops, boating trips and more in the future. Our care homes provide everything from crafts to exercise classes to suit the interests of people from all walks of life but you can find out more about care home activities on our individual care home pages or by talking to our team.
