Celebrating Dementia Action Week 2024

May 15th 2024

This week is Dementia Action Week 2024 so we’re celebrating raising awareness and what the yearly event is.

What is Dementia Action Week 2024?

This year, Dementia Action Week, also known as Dementia Awareness Week falls between the 13-19 May 2024 and is a yearly event aimed at raising awareness of and taking action on all of the issues that surround Dementia diagnosis, care and treatment.

What is the Key Focus for Dementia Action This Year?

This year, campaigners are focussing on Dementia diagnosis and calling on the government and the national health service to prioritise Dementia in policy and decision-making. Campaigners including Alzheimers UK are using the week to take action on improving Dementia diagnosis rates.

Highlighting Dementia Diagnosis Rates

Astoundingly, one in three people currently living in the UK with Dementia do not have a formal diagnosis meaning they may not be getting the support they need. An early intervention means individuals are better able to plan for the future including giving them more time to look at home and residential care options that fit their needs. An early diagnosis can also be extremely helpful for friends and family members so they can receive the support they need.

Where to Find Support Around a Dementia Diagnosis

If you are concerned about your memory or the memory of a loved one, it is important to consult a specialist, such as your GP as soon as possible. Dementia UK offers plenty of guidance around getting a Dementia diagnosis and what to do once a diagnosis has been received. The Alzheimer’s Society also has a handy checklist for possible signs of Dementia that can help you give your GP clear information on how you are feeling.
