Can a Nurse Become a Manager?
The smooth running of a residential care home relies on the skills of fully trained staff and a good registered care home manager. At Select Healthcare, our qualified home managers are also RGNs and are responsible for multiple aspects of the daily operations in a care home setting. Becoming a Registered Nurse Manager is an excellent way to progress in your nursing career as a nurse working in a care home.
What Does a Registered Nurse Manager do?
Inside a Select Healthcare home, registered nurse managers support the staff team and are responsible for overseeing the care of the residents as well as ensuring the home remains compliant with regulations and legal requirements. From nursing leadership and management to maintaining quality assurance and meeting with multidisciplinary teams, the role of a registered nurse manager is varied and centred around providing high-quality care in a safe and secure environment.
What are the Roles and Responsibilities of a Nurse Manager?
One of the main responsibilities of a Registered Nurse Manager is to ensure that the care home is operating in line with the regulations and laws set out by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). This is done by reviewing and revising the policies in place. Whether the home is a residential care home, palliative care home or EMI care home, the Nurse manager will also have duties focused on the following areas:
-
Managing Nursing and care staff
-
Leading team meetings and handovers
-
Meeting with new residents, their families and friends
-
Staff recruitment and management
-
Safeguarding
Registered Nurses Vs Registered Nurse Managers - What is the Difference?
Registered General Nurses (RGNs) play an important role within Select Healthcare homes by providing round-the-clock nursing care to residents as well as managing medication, supporting the staff team, updating care plans and taking part in multidisciplinary meetings. Nurse managers typically have the same responsibilities along with additional managerial duties. Here are some of the main differences between an RGN and a Registered nurse manager within Select Healthcare homes.
Qualifications for Nurse managers
One of the main things that separate RGNs from registered nurse managers is the levels of qualifications needed to do the job. In Select Healthcare homes, Nurse managers are qualified registered nurses who have achieved an NVQ Level 5 in Health and Social Care. In addition, our nurse managers are required to have at least 2 years of previous experience in a registered manager role. As well as being registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Nurse managers also need to complete Continuous Professional Development to maintain their registration. When working in a Select Healthcare home, it is also essential to have training specific to the needs of the residents and the type of care provided like EMI care or Dementia Care.
Nurse managers also need to be equipped with additional skills like :
-
Counselling skills
-
Sensitivity and understanding
-
Patient and calm in stressful situations
-
Strong IT skills and knowledge of patient data management software
-
Excellent decision-making and multi-tasking skills
-
Time management skills including scheduling shifts and arranging appropriate staff cover.
-
Excellent communication skills and diplomacy
Staffing and Recruitment Responsibilities
Another difference between Registered nurses and registered nurse managers is the supervisory responsibilities. RGNs are responsible for coordinating and providing support to the care team. However, Registered nurse managers recruit new nursing staff, arrange their orientation and create rotas for the staff team to ensure appropriate staffing levels. A nurse manager will also oversee staff training and development and provide opportunities for career enhancement to all staff members.
