Select Healthcare’s Learning Disability Care Homes

July 13th 2022

A learning disability describes the reduced or impaired ability to understand new and complex information. This means individuals with learning disabilities struggle with aspects of daily life like personal care, social interaction, managing finances or household chores. Learning disabilities can range from mild or moderate learning disabilities to profound and multiple learning disabilities. Individuals with severe learning disabilities may require additional support with mobility and communication. A Learning Disability Care Home offers support to individuals in a way that promotes independence and inclusivity.

What Is Residential Care for Adults With Learning Disabilities?

Residential care for adults with learning disabilities supports the daily needs of adults who require additional care at home and in the community. Residential care will look different depending on whether an individual has mild learning disabilities, severe learning disabilities, profound and multiple learning disabilities. Some adults with mild learning disabilities may require minimal support with tasks in the home and community like household cleaning, weekly shopping, going to college or finding a job. Adults with a severe learning disability or profound and multiple learning disabilities need a higher level of support which may include personal care, feeding and mobility support. At Select Healthcare, our learning disability care homes house between 7 and 15 residents and provide round-the-clock care which includes meals, activities, personal care support and medication management.

Who Lives In A Learning Disability Care Home?

What Should I Expect From a Good Learning Disability Care Home?

There are many care homes throughout the UK and it can be difficult to know what to look for in residential homes for adults with learning disabilities. When it comes to supporting adults with learning disabilities, the level of care we provide in Select Healthcare homes is based on the unique needs of the individual. Here are a few other things to look for in good residential homes for adults with learning disabilities:

Person-centred Care Planning

Every person that lives in a Select Healthcare home has a person-centred care plan that is created by the care staff, families and where possible, the individual who is living in the care home. These care plans describe the way the person with learning disabilities prefers to be supported as well as details about their daily needs including dietary information, details of their medication and other important details to support their day-to-day lives. Person-centred care plans are a great way to promote independence within the care home.

Access To Medical Care

At Select Healthcare, our residential care homes for adults with learning disabilities support individuals with all aspects of their medical care. This includes things like access to 24-hour care staff and support to attend routine and scheduled GP appointments. Additional services like chiropody, optician and dental services are available and where possible, residents are supported to access these facilities in the community.

What Types Of Services Are Available For Individuals With Learning Disabilities?

A learning disability will affect someone for their entire lives however with the right services and support in place, some people with learning disabilities can lead independent lives. Within Select Healthcare’s homes for adults with learning disabilities, the adults we support have access to professionals and services to enhance their quality of life and improve their well-being. The services we provide in our learning disability care homes support multiple aspects of life including:

  • Physical health - 24-hr care staff provide round-the-clock care which includes administering medication. Care staff regularly update care plans so physical health is always monitored and any changes are documented and investigated

  • Communication - many individuals with learning disabilities use a variety of methods to communicate including PEC symbols, Makaton and BSL. Staff within our care homes are trained to use the preferred methods of communication so that they can support adults with learning disabilities in the best way

  • Mental health - having access to Psychologists and Psychiatrist services are extremely essential in cases where an individual has both a learning disability and a mental health condition. The care staff within a learning disability care home are also trained to help to support the emotional wellbeing of the individual. Keeping care plans updated means any deterioration in mental health can be identified and monitored by the appropriate teams

  • Education - residential care home staff often support adults with learning disabilities to attend college and further their education.  Care staff also help residents develop life skills which enhance their independence

  • Activities - At Select Healthcare homes we have Activity Co-ordinators who create engaging and varied activities designed to entertain, stimulate and encourage inclusion within the care home. Day trips, festive days and holidays as well as in-house activities like arts and crafts, movie and games nights are all a part of life in a Select Healthcare residential care home for adults with learning disabilities
